I once read, don't recall where, that the unique architecture of the Provo (and formerly Ogden) temple was meant to represent the pillar fire and cloud that led ancient Israel in the desert. I can see that. What was once an odd building (i.e. Birthday Cake) now has added meaning and symbolism for me--I too hope they leave it as is, though they've already painted over the gold spire, obscuring some of the obvious visual prompts.
